HOLY SPIRIT PART TWO

March 14, 2011

Have I Ever Committed The Unpardonable Sin?

There is much that can be said about this topic under discussion, and because of this, this piece will not be all-inclusive. However, paramount to our understanding of Christ’s words: “And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come,” is our comprehension of God the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives. This will be my focus.

Greek Scholar, Dr. Spiros Zodhiates:

It is to be noted that these words of the Lord were spoken immediately after the accusation was made against Him that the works He was doing were done by the power of Beelzebul, the chief of the demons. The words of Christ become far more understandable if we examine what occasioned them. What the Lord wanted to teach after this discussion regarding the activity of the devil among men was this: The devil is really not the countertype of the Lord Jesus in the plan of man’s salvation, but he is the countertype of the Holy Spirit whose function is to convict unto repentance or reprove the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment, “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment” (John 16:7, 8). The devil counteracts this conviction. The Holy Spirit brings judgment upon the devil. The two are counteracting each other.

In order that we may be convicted of our sin, it is necessary for us to allow the Holy Spirit to work in us. In other words, any sin that we confess to the Lord He will forgive, being able and ready to remove it from us. But, if an individual has not been convicted of sin, how can he confess Christ? And this is what makes our Lord’s statement understandable, “But whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him.”

As to the relationship of the sin of blasphemy to the Holy Spirit in Matthew 12:32, “But whoever shall speak against (Kata, 2596) the Holy Spirit.” In Mark 3:29, “But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit.” In Greek it does not say “against” but “unto” (eis, 1519), which means “unto or in the face of.” In Luke 12:10 the same preposition is used. Actually the use of this preposition, eis, makes the blasphemy worse. With kata, “against” we may understand that the blasphemy is spoken against the Holy Spirit to others, but with the preposition eis we may understand that the blasphemy is hurled directly in the face of the Holy Spirit. It is as if man is defying the Holy Spirit and says, “There is nothing you can do to divert me from my present sinful course. I am going to have my own way regardless of the shame brought upon the name of Christ.” If one does not submit to the convicting power of the Holy Spirit and repent, in the future God is not going to grant that person exemption from the consequences of his failure during his earthly life. The bed that one makes in his life will be the one he must lie in for eternity!

Eternal judgment is based upon the judgment of sin on this earth. In eternity God is going to respect our will which we have exercised in the here and now. If we chose to defy God here and the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, then God is going to defy us in eternity and let us reap the results of the choice we made.

Conclusion by Cochise

Jesus Christ said that God the Holy Spirit would come and convict the world of sin. If an individual has not been convicted of sin, how can he confess Christ? Without the confession of Christ (“that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved” Romans 10:9), eternal sin, then, is realized. Therefore, eternal judgment is received. Let us then, allow, the Holy Spirit to do His work, in us, so that we can repent and receive eternal life. Let us never resist Him! Let us never blasphemy Him (the word blasphemies means to say something which hurts a person). Let us never say to Him, “There is nothing you can do to divert me from my present sinful course. I am going to have my own way regardless of the shame brought upon the name of Christ.”

Let us, never, exhibit the same mentality of the Pharisees or any who oppose or reject the Holy Spirit’s convicting power of sin.

HOLY SPIRIT

The Unpardonable Sin

“He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters. Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come.” (Matthew 12:30-32)

Many examples in both the Old and New Testament indicate that the Holy Spirit will bestow or withdraw blessing according to whether or not He is pleased by the situation He sees. It is noteworthy that Jesus was completely without sin and the “Holy Spirit” remained. “And John bore witness saying, ‘I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.” (John 1:32) He remained on Christ without measure: “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure.” (John 3:34) In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit came mightily upon Samson several times (Judges 13:25; 14:6, 19; 15:14), but ultimately left him when he persisted in sin. “And she said, ‘The Philistines are upon you, Samson!’ And he woke from his sleep and said ‘I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.’ But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.’” (Judges 16:20). When the people of Israel rebelled and grieved the Holy Spirit He turned against them, “But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore, He turned Himself to become their enemy.” (Isaiah 63:10).

Also in the New Testament the Holy Spirit can be grieved and cease to bring blessing in a situation. Stephen rebuked the Jewish leaders, saying: “You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.” (Acts 7:51) Paul warns the Ephesians, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30) Paul also exhorts the Thessalonian church, “Do not quench the Spirit.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19)

Even more serious than grieving or quenching the Holy Spirit, there is a deeper, more hardened disobedience, which brings strong judgment; case in point, Ananias and Sapphira. Their failure of honesty and lying to God the Holy Spirit brought their demise. (Acts 5:1-10).

Finally, there remains one more level of offense against the Holy Spirit. This kind of offense is even more serious than grieving Him or acting with the hardened disobedience to Him that brings discipline or judgment. It is possible to offend the Holy Spirit that His convicting work will not be brought to bear again in a person’s life.

“Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come.” (Matthew 12:31,32)

To appreciate, fully, the words of Jesus, we must understand the background of the occasion.

The Pharisees expressed their hatred and animosity toward Jesus by accusing Him of being in league with the devil. The Pharisees attributed His miracles (healing the blind and deaf) to Beelzebub, the prince of demons. Their hatred was so intense that they considered Jesus an accomplice of not just demons but of the prince of darkness himself. In other words, Satan was being credited for the work done by the Holy Spirit.

They refused to acknowledge Jesus’ deity. They saw only the Son of man, not the Son of God. They did not see God the Son, the Creator of all things, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:1-4) In revealing His relationship with the Holy Spirit, Jesus said, “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose it to you.” (John 16:13-15) We can know the Son of God only through the Holy Spirit who has revealed Christ throughout all ages.

“Jesus Christ frequently spoke of Himself as the ‘Son of Man.’ These two verses (Matthew 12:31, 32) emphasize the dual nature of Christ. Spiteful words aimed at His humanity – the Son of God – are forgivable. Those directed at the Spirit of God working in or through Him are not forgivable. This is the only unforgivable sin mentioned in the Bible. Since the Father gave Jesus the Holy Spirit “without measure” (John 3:34), it was indistinguishable from His divine nature as the Son of God. Thus, the Spirit of God is called the Spirit of Christ (see, e.g., Rom. 8:9; 1 Pet. 1:11). A rejection of the Spirit of God is, therefore, a rejection of Christ’s deity.

According to verse 31, any sin or blasphemy against the Son of Man can be forgiven. Even on the cross, Jesus asked His Father to forgive those crucifying Him. But blasphemy against the One who reveals the truth about Christ cannot be forgiven. Jesus said that when the Holy Spirit would come, ‘He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment’ (John 16:8). The one who irrevocably rejects this conviction has no recourse: It ‘shall absolutely not be forgiven him.’” (World Class Greek Scholar Dr. Spiros Zodhiates, Exegetical Commentary on Matthew, pg. 156. 157)

Conclusion:

We must be very careful not to grieve or offend the Holy Spirit. He will not force Himself on us against our wills, but if we resist and quench and oppose Him, then his empowering will depart and He will remove much of the blessing of God from our lives. Therefore, it is imperative to depend and recognize the Holy Spirit’s power throughout our Christian journey, daily. “Then he answered and said to me, ‘This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel saying, Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.’” (Zechariah 4:6) Our Christian walk is according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:12-16; Gal. 5:16-26), and our minds on the things of the Spirit (Romans 8:4-6). Our ministry, whatever form it may take, is to be done in the power of the Holy Spirit. Rejoice in the Holy Spirit (Luke 10:21). Love in the Holy Spirit (Col. 1:8). Pray in the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 6:20; Jude 20). Let us, therefore, be consciously aware of the Holy Spirit’s presence and blessing.

God Said, “Listen To My Son” … Luke 9:35

August 8, 2010

During the Transfiguration found in Luke 9:35, God the Father said: “And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!'”

The Watchtower pride themselves on obeying Jehovah God. They boast to the world that they alone (their Organization) worship and serve the God of the Bible, Jehovah, in the manner He ascribes; however, after taking a closer look into their theology, it becomes apparent that their boast is not biblically founded, lacks credibility, and is misleading.

God The Father told the world in Luke 9:35 how to win His approval. Listening to His Son, Jesus Christ, is the only way that our worship is accepted. The Watchtower not only fails to listen to Jehovah’s Son, but contradicts His teachings.

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has already given the world the recipe for salvation. It is found at John 14:6 quoted here: “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no on comes to the Father but through Me.” The Watchtower, however, not only contradicts Jesus Christ, but usurps His authority by their published statement in 1981: “… come to Jehovah’s organization for salvation … ” Watchtower 11/15/1981, p.21.

Jesus Christ is the Person we must come to for salvation. He is the way … He is the Truth … He is the life … not the Watchtower, not the Mormons, not any organized religious or non-religious organization or person. Salvation has nothing to do with anything man-made.

We must listen, believe, obey, and follow our Lord Jesus Christ, because Jehovah God told us to do so. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”  John 3:16.

Where To Now?

July 11, 2010

After leaving the Watchtower after 18 years of indoctrination, and feeling all fuzzy/protected, where to now I asked?  Where shall I go … Who shall I believe … What should I believe … Who should I trust, and why … Where am I going to get the answers?  These are all questions that perplexed me for years.

My name is Cochise Pendleton.  After leaving the Watchtower organization and drifting for some time, I never ceased in my efforts to search-out and hopefully discover who God was … but more importantly, what did He want of me.

Once I came to realize the importance of God’s son, Jesus Christ, was baptized again in Christ, I then wrote a book.  The title of the book, “The Bible vs The Watchtower (The Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Authority) YOU DECIDE.”

I wanted to do more than just write a book and share it.  There had to be more!  That said, however, what could I do?  I knew my book would become a tool helping my former brothers and sisters with their Watchtower addiction/theology, but there was something even more critically needed.

Once you leave the bubble effect (pseudo spiritual protection) of the Organization, you will experience for lack of a better word, a hole … vacuum.  This hole needs to be filled.  If unattended, I have found that many who have left the Organization become either agnostic or atheistic (a side effect of leaving the Watchtower).

Rick Fearon, former member of the Watchtower, now Christian, hosts the SixScreensOfTheWatchtower.com  One of the programs, “Christianity 101” hosted by yours truly, in hopes to fill that proverbial hole caused by Watchtower removal. In other words, what does the Bible really teach on the subjects taught by the Watchtower?

Come and join the discussion. This is an open forum after the teaching is complete. I invite everyone to listen-in, participate, ask questions, and just be part of our Ex Jehovah’s Witnesses Bible discussions. Allow God’s word to fill your hearts without the Watchtower or religion telling you what to do.

My next program is July 18th at 5pm PST, and two weeks thereafter. The number to call is (712) 432-8710 pin# 9925.

Life After The Watchtower

July 4, 2010

What happens to those who leave the Watchtower after years of disillusionment?  Perhaps they were dis-fellowshiped or they just disassociated themselves to begin a new life.  Whatever the reason for their leaving, the question becomes … where are they now and what do they believe?

I am writing this blog because many of those who have left the Watchtower organization are still haunted (the effects of Watchtower brainwashing is a serious issue as personal experience has taught me) and perhaps lost.  There are some who have become agnostic or even atheists.  This of course is understandable and is one major side-effect of Watchtower mind-control. It is for this reason that my ministry has launched, and why I am writing this material.

There is a program that I host every other Sunday called, “Christianity 101.”   As a former member of the Watchtower organization for over 18 years, my ministry, today, is actually two-fold.  First, to help reverse the effects of Watchtower brainwashing, and second, to fill the void and hole that people experience once leaving the Organization.

I invite everyone who wishes to learn who God really is without someone looking over your shoulder policing what you do on a day-to-day basis.  Bring your bibles and get ready to learn how you can be saved, today, by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.  The number to call and listen-in, ask questions, or just enjoy the program twice-a-month is: (712) 432-8710 pin# 9925 … Our next program is July 4th at 5pm PST.  All programs are recorded for your listening pleasure.  You may listen to each recorded program on this website.   You may also ask questions by text … my personal cell: (949) 678-7378 … or email me at: youdecide@cox.net … My name is Cochise Pendleton and I hope to see you there!

Who Is Jesus Christ According To The Bible?

May 16, 2010

The Watchtower Organization claims that Jesus Christ is nothing more than a created thing. I know, because I was a member for over 18 years. That said, is that true … is it true that Christ was only an angel created by God The Father?

In the Gospel of John, Chapter 1 verse 1, it reads: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Verse 14 tells us who the Word (God) became: “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

We find in the book of John, Chapter 8 verse 58, who Jesus Christ claimed to be. It reads: “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.'” Jesus Christ identifies who He is, and who was that? In Exodus, Chapter 3 verse 14, it becomes very clear who He was claiming to be … “And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’; and He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, “I AM has sent me to you.”‘”

According to the Bible, Jesus Christ claimed to be God (I AM) and the Jews understood exactly what He was saying, because they then attempted to stone Him for blasphemy. That can be read in John, Chapter 10 verses 30-33.

Whether or not people believe that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh does not alter the fact that He was. The Bible is very clear on this point. The question, however, that needs to be addressed is why Watchtower members accept their leadership’s (the Watchtower Organization’s) teachings … i.e., that Christ was nothing more than an angel created by God The Father?

To understand why Jehovah’s Witnesses follow Watchtower leadership over biblical scripture, one must understand the Watchtower position on who they claim to be and represent. Once that is established and the truth of the matter becomes known, one can understand why members hang on to Watchtower theology so tenaciously.

This brings us to why I wrote my book — “The Bible vs The Watchtower (The Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Authority) You Decide …”  In it, you will discover why Watchtower members cling to every word they teach.  But first, read my mission statement (link below) to find out why I wrote the book.

Does God Use The Watchtower As His Instrument Of Communication To The World?

April 30, 2010

Here are a few quotes from Watchtower literature that establishes their position regarding God using them as His vehicle:

“Respond to the directions of the organization as you would the voice of God.”

“Failure to respond to the direction of the organization indicates a rejection of Divine rulership.”

“The truths I present as God’s mouthpiece.”

“The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society is the greatest corporation in the world, because from the time of its organization until now the Lord has used it as His channel through which to make known the glad tidings …”

“God uses The Watchtower to communicate to his people; it does not consist of men’s opinions.”

“… come to Jehovah’s organization for salvation …”

These quotes (all of which are in my book along with their referenced material) establish the true claimed position of the Watchtower organization. There is no ambiguity here. However, that said, the question still remains: Does God use the Watchtower as His vehicle to communicate with the world?

This question needs to be answered. It is my belief that if God actually speaks through the pages of the Watchtower … the world should be notified. However, conversely, if that wasn’t actually true, that too would need world attention.

You may find the answer to that question along with many others in my book, entitled: The Bible vs The Watchtower (The Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Authority) You Decide …

Jesus Christ Tells The World How He Will Return!

April 24, 2010

Jesus Himself told the disciples that His return would be so prominent and observable that everyone would immediately know it was happening. Thus, He reveals in Matthew Chapter 24 that if someone comes forward and reports that He has already returned, it will not be true:

“‘Then if anyone says to you, “Behold, here is the Christ,” or “There He is,” do not believe him. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. Behold, I told you in advance. If therefore they say to you, “Behold, He is in the wilderness,” do not go forth, or, “Behold, He is in the inner rooms,” do not believe them. For just as the lightning comes from the east, and flashes even to the west, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be.’” Matthew 24:23-27 (emphasis in original).

So could the Watchtower still be correct that Jesus already returned invisibly in heaven in 1874 (or 1914)? Or does the Bible indicate differently?

Are You Addicted To Watchtower Teachings?

April 17, 2010

Short And Sweet!

One of the tools the Watchtower uses to control their members is fear.  Fear is a very powerful motivator.  It not only creates dedication to the one using this tool, but it also enables the user to manipulate and control the minds of their membership. The question is why … why the addiction and why the fear?

Discover how to fear-no-more by clicking on the link below:
